Understanding CO2 Emissions in HVAC
The HVAC and refrigeration industry is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions through two channels: direct emissions from refrigerant leakage and indirect emissions from the electricity and fuel used to run equipment. This calculator addresses both.
Direct Refrigerant Emissions
When a refrigerant leaks from a system, its Global Warming Potential (GWP) determines how much heat it traps. One kilogram of R-410A (GWP 2088) has the same warming effect as 2088 kg of CO2 over 100 years. This is why refrigerant selection and leak prevention are central to any HVAC sustainability strategy. A single 10 kg charge of R-404A leaking at 10% per year for 15 years releases roughly 59 tonnes of CO2e - equivalent to driving a car around the Earth more than 12 times.
Indirect Energy Emissions
Even with zero leakage, equipment consumes energy throughout its lifetime. The carbon intensity of that energy depends on the source. An air-source heat pump running on Norway's hydro-dominated grid produces 20 times less CO2 than the same unit on Poland's coal-heavy grid. The grid emission factor is therefore the single most important variable when estimating operational carbon footprint.
Regulatory Context
The EU F-Gas Regulation (517/2014) and Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol are phasing down high-GWP HFCs. From 2025, refrigerants with GWP above 750 are banned in many new stationary applications across the EU, driving adoption of R-32, R-454B, R-1234yf, R-290 (propane), and natural refrigerants like R-717 (ammonia) and R-744 (CO2).
How to Reduce HVAC Emissions
- Switch to low-GWP refrigerants - move from R-410A or R-404A to R-32, R-454B, R-290, or natural refrigerants.
- Improve leak detection - install fixed leak detectors and perform regular leak surveys to reduce annual leak rates below 5%.
- Recover at end-of-life - properly recover and reclaim refrigerant during service and decommissioning; never vent to atmosphere.
- Increase efficiency - higher SEER/SCOP equipment consumes less electricity, reducing indirect emissions.
- Source clean electricity - where possible, procure renewable electricity or on-site solar to cut operational carbon.
Emission Factors Used
This calculator uses widely cited emission factors: refrigerant GWP values from IPCC AR4/AR5 and the EU F-Gas Regulation; grid emission factors from IEA and national energy agencies; and fuel emission factors from UK BEIS/DEFRA greenhouse gas reporting. All values are indicative averages - actual emissions may differ based on equipment condition, measurement method, and data vintage.
